Julius the flute player

A journey through the centuries of the music world
Concert for the whole family with Flautando Cologne

Admission: € 15 - 35, children up to 12 years free

In this concert program for children, the central figure of "Julius" takes the children on an exciting journey through the centuries, distant countries and the world of music.

Julius, on the way to flute lessons, overslept the usual bus stop and suddenly found himself back in the Middle Ages. On his way back he not only meets musicians and minstrels from different continents, but also different flutes, musical styles and composers (including Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons).

Julius is curious and bright, he asks lots of questions and encourages the children to do the same. A lively dialogue develops in which the children learn a lot about music.

The other three musicians slip into different roles at this concert and actively involve the children in what is happening. The selected pieces of music illuminate many facets of music. There are rousing medieval minstrel dances but also meditative sounds that encourage quiet listening. The children experience how instruments can imitate animal sounds, they playfully learn what a fugue is or that it doesn't matter who can play the fastest.

Works by J.S. Bach, Ryohei Hirose, Heinrich Isaac, Antonio de Cabezón and others on more than 30 recorders of various sizes and designs.

The program, which also ends musically in the present, is aimed primarily at children of primary school age, but also at possibly younger siblings as well as their parents and grandparents.

Flautando Cologne is: Susanna Borsch - Susanne Hochscheid - Ursula Thelen - Kerstin de Witt. They sweep the dust out of the centuries-old scores with an almost contagious liveliness. More than 40 different recorders are used in their exciting tonal experiments. Highest precision and an astonishingly homogeneous, sometimes organ-like sound are the trademarks of the four excellent wind players, who always surprise with unusual performance concepts. In this context, a singing recorder player is certainly one of the special features of the charming formation from Cologne.
